Emergency bus timetable launched due to closure of historic bridge near Masham
A bus service linking Middleham, Leyburn and Ripon is operating to an emergency timetable following the closure of Middleham Bridge.
Service 159 has been affected after a heavy goods vehicle struck the historic bridge, resulting in a diversion being introduced from September 8.
The emergency arrangements will remain in place until further notice.
North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that inspections of the bridge are continuing following the collision.
A schedule for the repairs is expected to be released next week.
Damage to Middleham Bridge.
The Grade II-listed bridge suffered significant damage when it was struck by the HGV earlier this month and was subsequently closed while the condition of the structure was assessed.
Large sections of stonework have been lost, while the impact has also displaced part of the arch, creating what the council described as a “significant structural risk”.
The closure means changes have been made to Service 159.
Passengers travelling from Leyburn towards Ripon are being advised that buses will depart five minutes earlier than on the normal timetable.
In Middleham, the usual 9.23am departure will also leave five minutes earlier, at 9.18am, from West End Methodist Church.
Buses will divert from West End Methodist Church and operate non-stop via the A6108 East Witton Road, Cover Bridge, Barf Bank and Hallwith Road between Middleham and Leyburn.
Passengers have been warned that delays are possible because of the diversion.
