Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith, has approved the donation of two North Yorkshire fire engines to Ukraine.

The initiative is being coordinated through the charity Fire Aid, which acts as a humanitarian network, supporting fire and rescue services worldwide.

The decommissioned engines, which were used by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, remain fully functional and are expected to provide support to Ukrainian firefighters and communities.

Mr Skaith said:

These fire engines have served our communities well and now they can go on to serve the brave people of Ukraine.

Our emergency services consistently step up, and I’m proud of the volunteers who are giving up their time to drive these vehicles across Europe.

The move follows previous contributions from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service of breathing apparatus equipment in 2025 and a further fire engine provided in 2023.

The two fire engines will be transported to Ukraine via Poland, with the journey supported by volunteer drivers from the fire service.

Jo Coles, deputy mayor for policing, fire and crime said:

The donation of these fire engines means equipment no longer in use here can make a real difference on the frontline of the war in Ukraine.

Alongside the mayor, I’m extremely proud that North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service continues to support the UK's vital efforts to help save lives and protect communities.
