Ofsted rates Boroughbridge High School three years after last inspection
Boroughbridge High School meets "expected standard" in all areas, according to Ofsted.
The school, on Wetherby Road, was visited by inspectors on June 30, 2026, and the report was published today (September 29). It was its first inspection since 2023.
Under the new Ofsted grading system, which has removed labels such as "outstanding" and "good", reaching the expected standards means “they are following the standard set out in statutory and non statutory legislation and the professional standards expected of them”.
This grade sits below 'exceptional' and 'strong standard'.
The report praised the renewed behaviour policy, noting that pupils typically behave well and that leaders support those who need an adapted approach, as well as deal with serious incidents quickly and effectively.
In every category the report had little criticism, although the phrasing often used "generally", "most" and "typically" — suggesting the school’s main area for focus is ensuring consistency across the departments in areas such as marking, adaptations and assessment.
Other next steps recommended included deeper implementation of strategies to improve attendance, ensuring more support for disadvantaged pupils and improving pupils’ understanding of the PSHE curriculum.

We are particularly proud that the respectful and courteous relationships within our school community were recognised and that our young people progress successfully to a range of destinations that reflect their talents and interests.
This success belongs to us all; our staff, students, families, our Governing Board and our entire community. We are determined to build on this success and continue to improve for the benefit of our young people.
In the last Ofsted inspection, in May 2023, the school was rated as "requires improvement", with requires improvement grading for behaviour and attitudes, and leadership and management.
