Former Ripon Grammar School pupil Finlay Bean has left Yorkshire Cricket Club and joined Northamptonshire, it was announced today (November 3).

Harrogate-born Bean, 24, was one of two former Studley Royal Cricket Club players at Yorkshire last season. The other was opening bowler Ben Coad, who remains there.

Bean said leaving his boyhood club wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right move at this stage of his career.

He added:

Representing Yorkshire has given me so many opportunities to develop, both as a person and as a cricketer. I have some great memories and will look back fondly on my time at the club.

To have represented my home county alongside guys I have grown up with, as well as players I’ve watched on TV, is something I am proud of and feel very fortunate to have experienced.

Bean came through Yorkshire’s academy and made his name scoring a record 441 for the club’s second team in 2022.

He earned a first-team contract and scored 2,649 runs in 48 matches at an average of 33.53, including seven centuries and a career best 224 against Nottinghamshire.

But he struggled to hold down a first team place in 2026.

Gavin Hamilton, Yorkshire’s general manager of cricket, said:

We’ve had some really honest conversations with Fin over the last year or so and during that time he has consistently pushed for regular cricket, as he should.

Fin has been a brilliant player for Yorkshire and has been a great person to have in the changing room too. We’d have been delighted to see him fulfil the remainder of his contract, but we understand and respect his ambition.

It’s never easy to see players leave, particularly those who are products of our academy, but we’re proud of the part Yorkshire has played in his development and wish him every success for the future.

Bean’s new contract will see him stay at Northants until 2029.
