Menopause is a stage of life that every woman will experience - yet for many, it can still feel confusing, overwhelming, and isolating. From changes in energy levels and sleep to shifts in mood, confidence, strength, and body composition, the impact can be both physical and emotional. But one thing is becoming increasingly clear: exercise can play a hugely positive role in supporting women through all stages of menopause.

At Empower Fitness Harrogate, women are encouraged to see exercise as a powerful tool to help them feel stronger, healthier, and more positive in everyday life, not as something that feels like pressure or punishment.

Founded by lead coach and owner Kate Fishwick, Empower Fitness is a women-only gym on Hornbeam Park designed around one simple mission: helping women to feel empowered in all areas of their lives.

Why exercise matters during menopause

Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can affect

  • Energy levels
  • Sleep quality
  • Mood and stress levels
  • Bone density
  • Muscle mass
  • Confidence and motivation

While these changes are completely normal, regular exercise can make a significant difference in helping women manage symptoms and maintain long-term health.

In particular, strength training is one of the most beneficial forms of exercise during menopause. As women age, muscle mass naturally declines and bone density can reduce, increasing the risk of weakness, injury, and osteoporosis.

Strength training helps counteract this by maintaining and building muscle, supporting bone health, improving balance, stability, energy and resilience and helping women feel physically capable and confident.

Most importantly - strength training is not about becoming the strongest person in the gym - a mantra Kate and the team at Empower reiterate to all their members. At Empower, strength training is approached in a supportive and scalable way, suitable for all experience levels. Whether someone is completely new to training or has exercised for years, sessions are adapted to meet women where they are.

More than fitness

What makes Empower different is its focus on how women feel, not just how they perform.

The gym offers coach-led Group and Lift classes incorporating:

  • Strength training
  • Cardio
  • HIIT
  • Core work
  • Mobility and conditioning

Every session is designed to be welcoming, encouraging, and enjoyable – helping women build confidence alongside improving their fitness.

For many women navigating menopause, simply having a supportive environment where they feel understood can be transformational.

The ethos at Empower is clear:

You do not have to be the fittest, fastest, or strongest person in the room to belong there. Showing up consistently, moving your body, and working at your own level is enough.

The members at Empower say it best:

Menopause is a huge transition for women, bringing changes in hormones, strength, energy and family life.

Having the support of a women’s gym like Empower Fitness has been invaluable — helping me stay physically strong, improve my fitness, and support my mental wellbeing through encouraging coaches and a supportive community.  — Clare

Training with Empower Fitness has really helped me through menopause. The strength-focused training complements my triathlon work perfectly, and the focus on form and technique has helped me slow down, tune into my body, and feel stronger both physically and mentally.

The support, encouragement, and community at Empower genuinely make a difference to my energy, mood, and overall wellbeing. — Amanda

Working with Kate, Nina and Tina at Empower Fitness has made a huge difference in managing my perimenopause symptoms.

Their expertise and supportive, all-female environment make it easy to adapt exercises, build strength, and feel good both physically and mentally. Empower truly feels like a safe, encouraging space for every woman. — Janis

Supporting women beyond the gym

Empower Fitness is now taking that support one step further through a new affiliation with Thrive Life Coaching by Kate Hodson, creating even more opportunities for women to access guidance on health, wellbeing, mindset, and menopause.

As part of this collaboration, Empower Fitness will host a Menopause Workshop on 20th June at their Hornbeam Park facility, open to both members and non-members.

The workshop will provide women with:

  • Education around menopause and hormonal changes
  • Practical lifestyle and nutrition advice
  • Guidance on exercise and strength training
  • Supportive discussions in a welcoming environment

The aim is simple: to help women feel informed, supported, and empowered during a stage of life that often goes undiscussed.

As part of Empower’s commitment to supporting women through every stage of midlife, members of the gym will also have access to exclusive reduced rates for 1:1 coaching sessions with Kate Hodson. Offering a calm, supportive space to explore menopause, identity, confidence and the next chapter with greater clarity and support.

Empowered through every stage

Menopause isn’t the end of feeling strong, healthy, or confident – in many ways, it can be the beginning of a new chapter.

With the right support, movement, and community, women can continue to build strength physically and mentally for years to come.

At Empower Fitness Harrogate, that’s exactly what the team is passionate about creating: a space where women feel energised, encouraged and empowered in every area of their lives.
