An e-scooter rider who was chased by police in Harrogate has received a suspended custodial sentence.
Logan Sinyokosa, 20, appeared at Harrogate Magistrates Court on Thursday (October 30) charged with driving a motor vehicle dangerously on Ainsty Road on October 11 this year.
Sinyokosa, of Croft Avenue, Killinghall, pleaded guilty to the offence and to separate charges of using a motor vehicle on a road without insurance and possessing cannabis on the same day.
Insurance is required for more powerful e-bikes that can travel in excess of 15.5mph without pedalling.
A separate allegation of failing to stop when asked by police was withdrawn.
Sinyokosa was sentenced to 16 weeks in a young offender institution. However, the sentence was suspended for 12 months.
Court documents say “the offence(s) are so serious that only a custodial sentence can be justified” because the “manner of driving could cause serious harm to the public and there was a police chase”.
They add the custodial sentence was suspended because: of the “Sentencing Act 2026, age and maturity of the defendant and defendant's previous good character”.
The Sentencing Act said courts can only order immediate custody for sentences of 12 months or less in exceptional circumstances.
Sinyokosa was fined £154 and ordered to pay £85 court costs.
