The past 120 years has seen two world wars, five British monarchs and the creation of the internet.

Throughout all this, a family-run Harrogate business has been providing furniture to people across the UK.

Smiths of Harrogate, founded in 1906, celebrated its momentous birthday with freebies, cake and a visit from Councillor Viv Poskitt, the Mayor of Harrogate.

The Friday (July 3) evening party saw complimentary wine, cheese, live harp music and anniversary cake.

The weekend also featured competitions, demonstrations from experts and the chance to get a free teddy bear with purchases.

The fifth-generation family business started off as a small second-hand furniture shop and has since grown into one of Yorkshire’s largest independent furniture retailers.

In 1935, the business moved into the former roller-skating rink on Dragon Road, a landmark building that has been synonymous with Smiths ever since.

Today, six members of the Smith family are involved in the business, with several generations continuing to work alongside one another.
