An ancient burial site between Ripon and Masham has been added to Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.
The register records historic buildings, archaeological sites and other important heritage places in England that are in danger of being damaged, deteriorating or losing their historic significance.
Historic England, a public body, updates the list each year and the 2026 version has been revealed today (November 5).
The only new entry from the Harrogate district is the Bronze Age burial site, known as a round barrow, 425 metres north-west of Rushwood Hall in East Tanfield.
The site, which is about 30 metres wide and just 30 centimetres high, is located within one of North Yorkshire’s richest archaeological landscapes.
It is close to Thornborough Henges, a Neolithic ceremonial complex, and is believed to contain human remains and evidence of prehistoric burial practices.
Fylingdales Moor, where a major wildfire broke out in June 2025, is among the other sites added to this year’s list.
More than 20 scheduled monuments, six listed buildings and natural environments, including significant peatlands, were damaged in the fire.
